One of my favourite uses of technology

20150424_151547

A form of technology that I personally use is a pedal box for my bass guitar. This form of technology is used to alter and enhance the sound delivered through the amplifier. This means that I can play for a different guitar if need be, by altering the dials and settings on the pedal. Another example is the common keyboard/synthesiser. This instrument uses a selection of stored sounds that allow it to be almost any other instrument. Best example is the main theme from Beverley Hills Cop “Axel F“. You can see that the keyboard is making different sounds. This is basically what can be done with a guitar and bass guitar, through pedal boards. Musicians use these to increase the the power of their instruments during shows, or to change the mood depending on the particular song, venue or audience.

The use of pedals also varies depending on the band. Led Zeppelin may use one kind of effect while Korn or Guns and Roses use something different, again it depends on what they require in order for their instruments to perform at peak levels.

The technology of generations X and Y is phasing out like a sunset over the ocean. Each minute of the sun is like another piece of old technology being updated, made obsolete or discarded altogether. At the same time as these two generations’ technology sun sets, the I generation’s sun is rising with each piece of the old technology fading away and bringing to light newer and more advanced technology. Despite this, this technology will fade in time just as the new sun sets and gives rises to a new day and new technology. Educators need to be aware of this change and try and keep up with it by evolving their ICT skills in order to keep up with the new generation. The train of technology keeps on rolling.

The joys of researching journal articles

I know I haven’t been blogging as much as I should but there you go.

No, I want to talk about searching for journal articles. Yes I know the assignments require ten to twelve of them but where can we go? I have been to Wiley.com and others, registered for free, but found that just to browse some of their relevant articles costs you a small fortune.Do not get me wrong though, some of the abstracts can be enlightening, but you still have to be very picky with what you are looking for.

Thanks again readers

Matt

Research into Mathematics and ICT

G’day.

Well, as you all may know locating research to support your statements is quite a task. Finding relevant material for my artefact for EDC 3100 is driving me up the wall. The research in existence is sometimes 10 years old or your search provides you with ICT resources for teaching mathematics instead of articles of on the subject. However, I have found relevant information that I believe will benefit my assignment. When it comes to undertaking research on-line, it really does pay to go through different search engines like Google Books and Google Scholar. Through using these it is possible that you can narrow your search for particular research articles, reports and books depending on the year in question.

It is up to the researcher to choose their methods of searching. Any extra search engines or research tips would be appreciated. For any new researchers or people new to ICTs, I have found a site that provides 10 tips for searching on line. The link is: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10-things/10-tips-for-smarter-more-efficient-internet-searching/.

Good luck and happy researching.

Learning Mathematics through ICTs

I have found the artefact part of this assignment for this subject a major pain in the backside. However, in having to use different ICT methods in order to create it has improved my own ICT understanding. Using ICTs with mathematics is becoming a common site within the Early Childhood sector. I know I am speculating a little but I saw first hand the counting and addition/ subtraction games used by Prep students while on my professional experience last year.

As I am unable to access the same sites used by the school I went off and found one used to help students learn to tell the time. The game is called Hickory Dickory. Clock. This game is able to be used by students In Years 1 to 3 (and possibly Prep) as it contains time including o’clock, half past (see this link for Year 1 (ACMMG020) and quarter to (Year 2 link (ACMMG039).  The game itself hickory4 (Barrett, 2004) can be found and played at http://www.ictgames.com/hickory4.html.

The aim of the game is to locate the time displayed in the box on one of the three clock faces. Clicking on a clock places a piece of cheese on it, which if correct, makes the mouse come out and eat it, while an incorrect answer will cause it to be chased by the cat. It is this game that I will be using as an example of ICT within mathematics for my artefact.

Wow! What a lot of work.

Well it is of week one the end of week one, and I feel like a wrung sponge. It is not all bad considering that I now have the ability to be able to blog and am recognising more and more areas where ICTs come into play within the world. A very classic example of ICT is Facebook, which almost everyone can access.

Through the application of Facebook, people are able to connect with one another as if they were in the same room or they can have access to university web pages for their particular subjects or even a local business. Some examples are that it is a low-cost marketing strategy, it makes for simple customer service options and it provides a wider and faster method for word of mouth advertising through the customers. More on this here.

Thanks 🙂

G’day

Hey everyone my name is Matt Scheiwe (pronounced Shy/ve).

I am a fourth year student studying Early Childhood, and am trying to balance my wedding next Saturday with all of semester’s work. This is my second blog even though it is supposed to be the first, and I am finding it fairly simple.

ICT is going to be a lot of work, but so far I appear to be able to keep up with the practical side of the blog work. Hope my first blog was okay. I do some amature modifying in some of my PC games (sometimes leading to a crash) and am able to navigate the internet, hyperlink and work with microsoft word.

I am hoping that this course will increase my knowledge and understanding of ICT and how it can be used in my future career.

Thanks

Matt

Welcome to my first blog post.

As a student growing with the internet, I never thought that I would have to depend so heavily on ICT. Beginning EDC 3100 and finding out that I would be blogging and using sites I have never used before, caused me to regard it as an ‘evil’ and painful experience. However, I looked into some of the advantages of ICT and found that it opens new forms of communication and data gathering abilities for industry and schooling, while the downsides can be cyber-security issues and also the ability to read body language during communication (Walton, 2015).

In education, students who use ICT improve in their meta-cognitive skills and are able to progress their learning at their own pace (Edinson, 2011). With this information, I have come to the conclusion that it is important that educators should embrace ICT and see that it is not as evil as it is made out to be, but another way for knowledge to be imparted to students. For more reading into my research, I have linked the references to the pages. Thanks
